Celebrating first win is important.
At Winuall Tech we have paced up our hiring, especially hiring freshers. We are taking in 50% of our total hires as freshers. Which means investing time into educating and bringing up new hires to pace.
What does first win mean?
When an engineer joins the team, the first task that makes into production, we consider that as the first win.
Along with the onboarding process of an engineer into the team, we try to assign a first issue which they can pick and finish quickly. We usually give them 1-2 weeks of time to finish the task, and help them through the learnings required.
We prefer giving them their first task right away instead of leaving them loose to absorb the system.
What do we achieve by this?
The first win has two major outcomes.
Engineer gets the sense of achievement, and gets recognised within the team.
The first task is a great entry point into the system.
Why celebrate the first win?
Celebrating the first win is the first stepping stone in recognising ones growth within the team. I still remember my first win in all my previous companies I’ve worked. The sense of accomplishment and the confidence boost plays a crucial role in becoming a valuable member of the team.
I hope this encourages you to implement this within your team.
